<image:caption>A summer's dawn on Lindisfarne and the lobster fishermen are preparing to go out and collect the night's catch.

As I sat on the rocks by the harbour waiting for the sunrise, all I could think of was give me something different to photograph.
It says much for the people of the 'island' that even though they must have seen a thousand photographers down the years, they were still friendly and willing to share a joke.

Giving me time to wind the iso speed up, quicken the shutter and widen the aperture before they started the boat's engine.

<image:caption>The very first rays of light catch Curbar Gap on a cold spring morning.

The right conditions provide these cloud inversions where the valleys, cooled by radiation, fill with fog while up on the hills the sun is shining.
This was very soon after dawn as the sun was just managing to throw it's light onto a patch of heather, a rock and a tree, but further down the valley was bouncing of the top of the mist.
Ground frost was relatively light, but the temperature was several degrees below freezing and as I hardly ever wear gloves when working, my hands tightened and became useless until the sun had done enough to raise the thermometer.

<image:caption>The morning sun lights up the rocks of Higger Tor overlooked by the retreating winter moon.

Despite appearances...it was cold with a biting wind. I noticed the moon's position within this scene and knew that if I gave it half an hour it would be in line with the large rock formation on the right. It was just a case of hoping that the light stayed while the moon got into position.
The bonus was the large sun burnt cloud dropping onto the horizon and I particularly like the distant patchwork of fields.

But even so, it's a magical location and one which never fails deliver an image or two.

<image:caption>It had been a long day and I had very little to show for it. I decided to spend the last few hours on Burbage Rocks thinking that if it proved as disappointing, then at least I was on my way home.
So there I sat under a gloomy sky for two hours when suddenly without warning the sun burst through and up on the horizon an old sheep came to see what I was up to....and I went home happy. Can't speak for the sheep.

<image:caption>I'd seen this barn on the hillside from the road on my way to Bakewell. It was clear from it's position in the landscape that it needed a mid morning sun to light it...if it was going to oblige at all. To achieve the angle and keep the composition tight, I opted for a long lens and set up by the side of a busy road.

It was to my surprise and, after a couple of lorries thundering by, relief that the very light I wanted happened after only ten minutes of waiting....and the lucky part was that the sheep and her lambs stayed right where I wanted them.

This pool had caught my eye from the dunes but when I got there it was covered in small mosquitos. I had a choice: try and wave them away long enough for a photo and have the air full of them, or include them as part of Bamburgh's natural scenery - so they are still there on the rock pool.

Somewhere beneath that cloud under the Grosmont coal hopper is Repton being readied for the run to Pickering.

<image:caption>Colmer's Hill and the Bride Valley beyond, taken as a fine mist lifted with the rising sun.

Named after John Colmer, the Vicar of Symondsbury, who owned the land on which the hill stood in the early 19thC. The stand of ragged pines were planted during WWI and the hill still stands on private land without a public footpath to it's summit.

It is also the inspiration for a proposed artwork entitled The Hill, which will be installed by Tower Bridge for the 2012 London Olympics.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A winter's dawn on Higger Tor with a hail storm approaching from the Mam Tor Ridge.

There was a 50mph wind with a numbing temperature attached to it, but I wanted a shot of that hail storm coming at me over the ridge. The tripod was weighted down with the camera rucksack and I had the one chance to the picture before the leading edge of the storm began to put water spots on the 0.75 Lee Soft grad I'd chosen to balance the exposure.
Then as the storm arrived it was a quick dash to Shelter Rock over on the left and five minutes of excruciating chilblains.

<image:caption>Built in 1313 by Earl Thomas of Lancaster, Dunstanburgh was once the largest and grandest of England's castles and here we see the famous Lilburn Tower.

For many years it was believed that it was built as a defence against the Scots, but if so, it's site was poorly chosen.
In fact it seems that it is here because Lancaster needed a showpiece as a backdrop to his dream of place that would never fully exist. A new Camelot.

It's one of Yorkshire's most photographed scenes although more often in the early evening. In this, Staithes is just waking up to a March sunrise.

<image:caption>Given man's influence on Lawrence Field over the years, with forest clearance, farming, field sports and tourism, the fact that this ancient and giant Birch tree remains standing is one of nature's puzzles.

One of those mornings when the light falls softly on the land. There was a strong breeze which helped to catch some movement in the clawing branches and that sunlight just caught the rounded shapes of the moorland.
